Abstract
Purpose: Among the various methods of implant surface coating with calcium phosphate (CaP), ion-beam assisted deposition (IBAD) method showed to produce favorable characteristics of the coating layer due to firm binding onto titanium enabling slow release profile of calcium phosphate and early osseointegration of implants. This study is a collaboration of results obtained through animal research undertaken at Yonsei University, Korea in order to determine the ideal criteria of coating layer produced using ion-beam assisted deposition method.

Materials and Methods: IBAD technique was utilized for the deposition of thin hydroxyapatite layers on the implant surface. Critical sized circumferential and intrabony defects were introduced to assess the CaP coated implants used in these studies. Several factors have been employed which may influence the characteristics of the coating layer including coating thickness, heat treatment, type of the underlying surface, multiple surface treatment and bone grafts.

Results: As a result, 150~500 nm was found to be the most effective coating thickness; heat treatment was seen to be beneficial; multitreatment created an offset effect; and bone grafts increased bone fill but did not improve bone to implant contact.

Conclusion: On the basis of the current evidence, CaP coated implant using the IBAD method was demonstrated to produce successful implant stability, osseointegraton and bone regeneration. Within the limitations of the suggested list of studies, the potentials of the IBAD method could be substantiated with the necessity of further investigation.
